The National Reference Laboratories include: the Botswana National Quality Assurance Laboratory (BNQAL), the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL), and the Botswana Harvard HIV Reference Laboratory (BHHRL)-these are all located in Gaborone. Lastly, the Nyangabgwe HIV Reference Laboratory (NHRL), located in Francistown.
The National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL)
The NTRL is the only laboratory that offers TB Culture and Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) in the country. The laboratory embraces both the genotypic and phenotypic testing. In addition, the laboratory supports TB External Quality Assurance through blinded smear re-checking. The NTRL has been earmarked for the supra national status, to serve as a regional TB reference laboratory for Southern Africa. If awarded, it will be the first of its kind in the Southern African region.
